Learn About Luxury Chopsticks Made in Japan
What sets BECOS's luxury chopsticks apart?
At BECOS, we offer only hand-crafted chopsticks made by reputable and long-standing makers from across Japan. We've been to the workshops ourselves and seen the chopsticks being crafted and the passion and attention to detail that goes into each set. This gives us the confidence to recommend any of the chopsticks on our site, knowing that our customers will be impressed with the craftsmanship.
What are luxury chopsticks made from?
Luxury Japanese chopsticks are made from wood coated with "urushi," a natural lacquer produced from tree sap. The wood can range from bamboo to cypress to cherry, but is always harvested domestically in Japan.
More expensive chopsticks oftentimes feature elaborate designs on the urushi coating, made from pearlescent shells, gold leaf, or other decorative material.
For example, the most expensive sets of Wajima lacquerware chopsticks sold on BECOS feature incredibly detailed gold paintings of a dragon and phoenix on them. They sell for just over $2,000 dollars per set. You can see them here and here.
How often should I replace my luxury chopsticks?
If you ask a typical chopstick maker how often you should replace your chopsticks, they will probably recommend you to do so every six months. However, most people go much longer than this before replacing their chopsticks.
In general, you'll want to replace a set of chopsticks once the tip becomes excessively worn, making it difficult to clean food particles that stick in the crevices of the wood.
However, what many people don't know is that when you buy an expensive set of lacquerware chopsticks, the maker will almost always be willing to repair the lacquer coating should it become worn or chipped over time. This can usually be arranged by contacting the maker directly.
