History

The Port of Yokohama, a Window to the World

HAMAMONYO, located in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, started as a textile printing factory for dyeing scarves and handkerchiefs in 1948.

The background of the company dates back to 1859, when the port of Yokohama was opened to foreign countries under a trade treaty concluded by the Edo shogunate.

As many foreign trading posts gathered and trade began, woodblock print artisans who had previously produced ukiyo-e prints and tea box labels for export moved in from all over Japan.

The mix of woodblock printing techniques from various parts of Japan and knowledge from abroad established "Yokohama textile printing" with full of originality.

Yokohama was blessed with a favorable climate and water resources, and textile printing became a major local industry.

"HAMAMONYO" was born from the accumulation of original dyeing techniques and exporting them overseas, while inheriting the traditional techniques of Yokohama textile printing.

Characteristic

To improve Yokohama's traditional textile dyeing

HAMAMONYO's TEXTILE is based on the traditional technique of "Yokohama textile printing", in which a variety of colors and delicate patterns are hand-dyed in molds.

Starting with woodblocks and paperblocks, the company eventually established a dyeing technique using screen molds.

In addition, we are particular about the unique texture and use only carefully selected cotton materials that achieve the feel and texture sought by HAMAMONYO.

Because sarashi (bleached cotton) does not use any chemicals, including chlorine-based chemicals, sarashi (bleached cotton) is friendly to both the environment and people.

Yokohama textile printing, which is characterized by the beauty and depth of its colors, is difficult to dye Japanese bleached fabrics as it is, and requires skilled techniques.

Using traditional techniques handed down from generation to generation and the skills of our craftsmen, we dye scenes of Japan's four seasons, nature, and Japanese culture in a playful, interesting, and beautiful way.

2008 "Tenugui Book Series" won the Hibino Katsuhiko Award at the 13th Yokohama Goods "Yokohama 001" held by the Yokohama Convention & Visitors Bureau.
