History
From Activities to Protect Lives to Activities to Support the Community
Peace Crafts SAGA is one of the projects of Peace Winds Japan (PW), a cetified NPO corporation that has been supporting people whose lives have been threatened by conflicts and disasters for more than 20 years.
Since its establishment in 1996, Peace Winds Japan has continued to provide assistance to people suffering from conflicts and natural disasters overseas, and has earned an excellent reputation worldwide as an NGO.
In recent years, in order to further improve society, Peace Winds Japan has also been involved in community revitalization projects and animal welfare projects in Japan.
The Saga office started up its work in 2017 and continue in order to pass the many traditional crafts that live on in Saga Prefecture to the future.
Characteristic
A myriad of traditional techniques in a rich natural environment
Saga Prefecture is famous for its pottery, such as Imari/Arita-yaki and Karatsu-yaki, which have a history of over 400 years, but there are also a wide variety of other traditional crafts such as Saga Nishiki (Woven Fabrics Saga), Nabeshima Dantsu (Nabeshima style carpet), Hizen Bidoro (Hizen Glass Craft), and Hizen Nao's handmade Japanese paper.
While the origins and development of each of these crafts differ, they all share the same professionalism, a desire not to let them disappear, and a love of their hometown.
However, as the Japanese people's lifestyles changed through rapid economic growth, sales of traditional crafts declined.
We want to pass on the skills of the masters we have received, and at the same time, we want to hand down new crafts to the next generation, incorporating the needs of the times.
We support such creators who are full of challenging spirit.
