Characteristic

Swiss design duo Kueng Caputo proposed creating a collection that truly pushed Arita’s renowned craftsmanship to its maximum limits.

Even today, a range of procedures in Arita’s ceramic industry are still carried out by hand especially those processes heavily reliant on extreme attention to detail.

The standout characteristics of this series, comprising a flower vase, plate and bowl are the geometric forms sculpted by the craftsman and the use of an airbrush known as fukitsuki or ‘airblast’ which harnessed a special technique to apply subtle gradations of colour to the pieces. This intentional application of graded colour by the craftsmen involved gives this collection its outstanding geometric appearance.

Profile

The young and engaging Swiss-born partnership of Sarah Kueng and Lovis Caputo have worked together since they were both students of design at the HGKZ Zurich.

Kueng Caputo practice design as response.

Their works have included the conceptual project ‘Copy’ and recently a playful approach to materials and applied decoration as seen in series such as Never Too Much.

There is an emphasis also, says Kueng Caputo, on understatement and improvisation.

Their first 'Five Stars Cardboard' installations at the Salone Satellite in 2007 went on to be shown in South Korea, Basel and New York.

Kueng Caputo is represented by salon 94 NYC.
