History

Communicating the charm of Uji through art

Our brand "CHAWAKA KYOTO UJI" is a combination of Uji tea, a specialty of Uji, and my sister's floral arrangements.

It was born out of a desire to contribute to the local community when I saw a tea shop on the shopping street where our atelier is located and suddenly realized that tea leaves are a plant.

In this day and age when there are fewer opportunities to brew tea directly from tea leaves, we want to convey the appeal of Uji tea to more people through art.

Uji tea is one of the three most famous teas in Japan, and is a green tea made using a process originating in Uji, Kyoto.

To ensure that Uji tea continues to be a top brand, farmers work hard and diligently to cultivate it.

The farmers I visited were having a hard time working on the steep slopes and were very careful about how they were exposed to sunlight.

Even though the tea leaves are produced under such physically and conditionally demanding conditions, they are strictly sorted, and out-of-specification tea leaves are removed from the harvest.

However, even tea leaves that cannot be shipped for drinking can fully be enjoyed for the refreshing aroma unique to Uji tea.

We used these tea leaves to create floral art to allow people to enjoy the fragrance.

This artwork is based on the sustainable spirit of making use of locally produced tea leaves without wasting them.

Uji tea leaves are carefully crafted by Uji tea artisans and arranged by experienced artists.

These two artworks from Uji are gently presented in a small wooden box.

The "CHAWAKA" artwork has obtained a utility model patent.

The flowers we use for our "CHAWAKA" are preserved flowers.

The water content of the fresh flowers is removed and processed so that the color will not fade over the years, so there is no need to water them.

This means anyone can easily enjoy a life with plants.

The small flowers are carefully combined one by one and packed with tea leaves in a wooden box inspired by a traditional tea box.

This is an unprecedented design that allows you to enjoy the lovely flowers and the refreshing aroma of tea together.

The wooden box is ideal as a container for delicate flower arrangements because it has the effect of regulating humidity and dryness.
