Taichi Kaizawa
Ita with an exquisite balance of patterns
Ita is the Ainu word for "wooden tray.”
This product is made from a rectangular piece of katsura wood, based on a pattern carved by Kaizawa’s grandfather 100 years ago.
Nibutani Ita are unique in that they are carved with a combination of three different patterns, and was the first style of Ita to be designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Hokkaido.
The Ainu wood carving craft is is traditionally handed down from father to son.
The artist naturally took up wood carving after watching his father, and now is engaged in activities to convey Ainu culture to others while also doing farming.
These products can be used in daily life or displayed as interior decorations.
