History
Pottery that has Operated for Four Generations
At present, Touan is run by its fourth generation owner.
The gorgeous colored glaze that characterizes Touan's works is formed by a new glaze that was researched and developed independently.
Today, this colored glaze has become an excellent innovation matched by none.
Also, the flower-centered pattern that is created with this glaze is underpinned by skill and touches the hearts of those who view it with a rich expressive power.
In recent years, Touan has received many praises for also creating interior decorations and other items that accurately match the needs of the market.
Characteristic
Original High-Temperature Glazing Technique
To bring the color out of most vivid paints used for pottery, the method typically used involves applying glaze, drawing a pattern on the glost fired pottery with overglaze enamel, and then firing it at a low temperature of around 800°C (over glazed decoration).
However, for more than thirty years, Touan has been engaging in research and development by persisting with a technique that involves painting the clay of the pottery first, glazing it, and then firing it at a high temperature of 1200°C or higher (under glazed decoration).
Under glazed decoration is said to be a technique that makes it difficult to produce various colors as it entails high-temperature firing.
Nonetheless, by seeking combinations of pigments and glaze that develop vivid colors even at high temperatures, Touan has made it possible to express colors with a sense of transparency that is similar to glass-coating.
Touan's high-temperature glazing technique is a creation that we are confident is second to none.
