Continuing the Challenge of Making Innovative Chopsticks

Matsukan was founded in Obama, Fukui Prefecture, in 1922.

Obama boasts over 400 years of history as one of the leading manufacturing regions of Wakasa-nuri lacquerware chopsticks, which are said to account for over 80% of current lacquerware chopstick production in Japan.

Since its founding, Matsukan has sought to protect traditional chopstick-making techniques while challenging itself to innovate and match the character of the times.

In recent years, efforts have been ramped up to new heights through several fresh, innovative projects.

This includes reproducing designs from Wakasa-nuri chopsticks used during the Edo period with the help of expert craftspeople, as well as collaborations with NENDO, a Japanese design studio led by Oki Sato, a designer said to be one of the hundred most respected Japanese people in the world.

Carefully Selected Materials Perfected By Skilled Craftspeople

Matsukan ensures that each pair of chopsticks are painstakingly crafted by artisans using only natural materials.

Wakasa-nuri chopsticks are known for their distinctive patterns and shine born through the careful and repeated polishing of seashells placed within the lacquer.

Lacquerware chopsticks are smooth and feel great to use.

The lacquered chopsticks, which are painted uniformly and carefully over and over again, are smooth to the touch and make you want to continue using them with care.
