Yakumo-nuri lacquerware that gains luster with each passing year

Yakumo-nuri is a type of lacquerware produced in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. In addition to the technique of lacquering, which has flourished as a traditional Japanese craft since ancient times, this lacquerware was created as a new technique inspired by lacquerware production in China and Southeast Asia. This cup is produced by Yakumonuri-Yamamoto, a long-established brand founded in 1887 and boasting a history of over 130 years.

The greatest feature of Yakumono-nuri is that the more it is used, the brighter and more colorful the pattern becomes. As the natural translucent urushi lacquer overlaid on the pattern becomes more transparent, the colors of the bowl become more apparent.

Today, there are only two workshops that produce Yakumono-nuri. Using only domestically produced natural lacquer, these high-quality cups are an item that will enrich your daily life.

Lacquered tableware has long been valued for a number of reasons. One of them is its water resistance. Lacquer on absorbent natural wood prevents water and oil from seeping into the wood. It also has heat insulation properties, making it convenient for use with both hot and cold food. It also has antiseptic properties, preventing corrosion of the wood from which it is made and enhancing its antibacterial properties.

Unlike ceramics, the wood material has the advantage of being lightweight. Since it will not break even if dropped, it can be used as a cup for children. The lacquered spoon in the set also has a good texture, making it a versatile item that can be used in a variety of situations.

The cups are of a comfortable size, with a mouth diameter of 8 cm and a height of 8 cm, and have a capacity of 180 ml, about the same as a standard coffee cup. The inside of each cup is painted differently, one in black and the other in red. It is nice to see the different expressions.

The saucer is approximately 12 cm in diameter and large enough to hold a set of spoons. The saucer itself is also thick enough to serve as a small plate on which to serve tea. Each saucer has a slightly different design.

And the spoon is of course lacquered. The length is approximately 13 cm and can be conveniently used as a dessert spoon as well as a teaspoon. Metal spoons can damage the lacquered surface, but the lacquered spoons in this set do not have to worry about that. The wooden and lightweight design also makes them safe and suitable for use by children.
