Shinobu Sugimura
Bringing the outstanding wood carving techniques of the Ainu people closer to you
Tumsi is an Ainu chain carving.
Originally tumsi were given to babies as a rattle, and when it eventually would be broken by vigorous use, the Ainu were happy to know that the baby had grown up.
This hair stick is made of onko (yew) wood, which is hard and has a beautiful grain.
The artist has added her own twist to the technique, learned from watching her mother carve when she was a child and which she hopes to pass on to as many people as possible.
They are perfect for hanging on a bag, attaching to keys, or as a gift!
